Built for Shade
Palmetto is the go-to St. Augustine variety for Jacksonville yards with significant tree cover. While Floratam needs a minimum of 6 hours of direct sun, Palmetto performs well with as little as 4 hours of sunlight per day. This makes it the clear choice for properties shaded by live oaks, water oaks, magnolias, and other mature trees common throughout Duval and St. Johns counties.
Palmetto is classified as a semi-dwarf St. Augustine cultivar. Its blades are finer and shorter than Floratam, giving it a softer texture underfoot. Despite its smaller stature, Palmetto develops a deep, aggressive root system that anchors the turf and provides resilience against drought, cold snaps, and heat stress.
Characteristics
- Blade width: Finer texture than Floratam with a semi-dwarf growth habit
- Color: Medium to dark green, maintains color better in shade than other St. Augustine varieties
- Growth habit: Compact, lower-growing with dense lateral spread
- Sun requirement: Minimum 4 hours of sunlight per day
- Heat tolerance: Excellent — handles Jacksonville summers without issue
- Cold tolerance: Superior among St. Augustine varieties — recovers faster from winter freezes
- Shade tolerance: Superior — the best shade performance of any widely available St. Augustine cultivar
- Drought tolerance: Good — deep root system helps it survive dry periods better than Floratam
Disease Resistance
Palmetto is resistant to Lethal Viral Necrosis (LVN), a disease that has caused significant damage to other St. Augustine varieties in Florida. This resistance provides an added layer of insurance for your lawn investment.
Best Uses in Jacksonville
Palmetto excels in several common Jacksonville yard scenarios.
- Shaded front yards: Properties with large street trees or mature landscaping that block direct sun for much of the day
- Under oak canopies: The areas beneath and around live oaks where Floratam consistently thins out and fails
- Mixed sun/shade yards: Palmetto can handle both partial shade and moderate sun, making it a versatile single-variety choice for yards with varying light conditions
- Older neighborhoods: Established Jacksonville neighborhoods like Avondale, San Marco, Ortega, and Mandarin with mature tree canopies
- North-facing yards: Properties where the house itself blocks direct southern sun for extended periods
Palmetto vs. Floratam
The most common question we get is whether to choose Palmetto or Floratam. The answer comes down to sunlight.
If your yard gets 6 or more hours of direct sun, Floratam is typically the better value. It grows more aggressively, fills in faster, and costs less per pallet. But if any significant portion of your yard is shaded for more than half the day, Floratam will thin out, develop bare spots, and become a recurring problem.
Palmetto costs slightly more per square foot than Floratam, but in shaded conditions it will establish successfully where Floratam will not. Many Jacksonville properties benefit from using both varieties — Floratam in the sunny open areas and Palmetto under and around trees.
Maintenance Requirements
- Mowing height: 3 to 3.5 inches. Palmetto's semi-dwarf habit means it stays shorter naturally, but maintaining adequate height is still important for root health.
- Mowing frequency: Every 7 to 10 days during peak growing season. Palmetto grows slower than Floratam, reducing mowing frequency.
- Watering: 0.75 to 1 inch per week. Palmetto's deep roots make it more efficient with water than Floratam, but shaded areas also retain moisture longer.
- Fertilizing: 2 to 3 applications per year. Avoid over-fertilizing in shaded areas, as excessive nitrogen promotes disease in low-light conditions.
- Pest management: Palmetto has fewer chinch bug issues than Floratam, partly because chinch bugs prefer hot, sunny areas. Monitor for gray leaf spot during humid periods, especially in heavy shade.
