JaMur Zoysia Grass in Jacksonville

Good shade tolerance, faster establishment, and a price point that makes Zoysia accessible. The practical choice for Jacksonville homeowners.

What Makes JaMur Zoysia Stand Out

JaMur Zoysia fills a gap in the Zoysia market that matters to a lot of Jacksonville homeowners: it gives you shade tolerance close to Zeon, establishment speed faster than most Zoysias, and a price closer to Empire. If you want a Zoysia lawn but don't want to pay premium prices or wait forever for it to fill in, JaMur deserves a hard look.

JaMur was developed by Sod Solutions and has built a solid reputation across the Southeast. It has a medium blade texture — finer than Empire but not as fine as Zeon — that produces a clean, attractive lawn. The color is a medium-dark green that stays consistent across the lawn as long as it's getting adequate nutrition.

What sets JaMur apart from other mid-range Zoysias is its establishment rate. Zoysia's biggest drawback has always been slow fill-in, and JaMur addresses that directly. It spreads faster than Empire or Zeon via aggressive stolon production, which means the seams between sod pieces close up sooner and you get a unified lawn faster.

Why Choose JaMur in Jacksonville

JaMur makes sense for Jacksonville homeowners in several specific situations. First, if your yard has moderate shade — say 4 to 6 hours of direct sun — and you want Zoysia instead of St. Augustine, JaMur gives you that option at a reasonable cost. Its shade performance is close to Zeon without the Zeon price tag.

Second, if the slow establishment speed of Zoysia has been holding you back, JaMur changes the math. Where Empire or Zeon might take 8 to 12 months to fully knit together from sod, JaMur typically closes its seams in 4 to 6 months during the growing season. That's still slower than Bermuda, but it's a meaningful improvement over other Zoysias.

Third, JaMur handles cold snaps better than Empire. Jacksonville occasionally gets freezes in December and January, and while all Zoysias go dormant in winter, JaMur tends to hold its green color longer into fall and green up earlier in spring. Over the course of a year, that can mean two to three extra weeks of green lawn compared to Empire.

JaMur is a strong general-purpose Zoysia. It doesn't have the visual refinement of Zeon or the extreme shade tolerance of Innovation, but it does everything well and costs less. For backyards, side yards, or any lawn where you want Zoysia's low-maintenance density without the premium price, JaMur delivers.

JaMur Zoysia Maintenance

Mowing: JaMur performs well at 1 to 2 inches. Its medium texture looks natural at either end of that range. During Jacksonville's peak growth months (June through August), mow every 7 to 10 days. In spring and fall, every 10 to 14 days is usually sufficient. Like all Zoysias, use a sharp blade to avoid tearing the leaves, which can create a brownish cast on the lawn.

Watering: JaMur's water needs are typical for Zoysia — about 0.75 inches per week during active growth. In Jacksonville's rainy summer months, you can often turn off the irrigation system entirely. During dry spring periods, one deep watering per week keeps JaMur looking healthy. The grass will show stress by curling its blades inward before going dormant, giving you a visual cue that it needs water.

Fertilization: Apply fertilizer 2 to 3 times during the growing season. A spring application in April, a midsummer application in June, and an optional fall application in September will keep JaMur well-fed. Use a slow-release nitrogen source to avoid growth surges that increase mowing frequency and thatch buildup. Total nitrogen for the year should be 2 to 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Thatch control: JaMur's faster establishment rate means it can build thatch somewhat quicker than slower-growing Zoysias. Monitor the thatch layer annually. If it exceeds half an inch, verticut in late spring when the grass is actively growing. Avoid dethatching during dormancy or during the hottest part of summer when recovery would be slow.

Cold weather: JaMur's improved cold tolerance doesn't mean it won't go dormant — it will, like every Zoysia in Jacksonville. But it handles the transition in and out of dormancy more gracefully. Avoid fertilizing after September, as late-season growth is more susceptible to cold damage. Let the grass harden off naturally going into winter.

How JaMur Compares to Other Zoysia Varieties

Compared to Empire Zoysia, JaMur establishes faster and handles shade slightly better. Empire has a longer track record and is more widely available at Jacksonville sod farms. Both are priced similarly. JaMur is the better choice if shade tolerance or establishment speed are priorities.

Compared to Zeon Zoysia, JaMur is less refined in appearance but costs less and fills in faster. Zeon's fine texture is visually superior, especially for front lawns. JaMur and Zeon have similar shade tolerance. If curb appeal is the main concern, Zeon wins. If budget and practicality matter more, JaMur is the smart pick.

Compared to Innovation Zoysia, JaMur has less shade tolerance and less traffic resistance, but it's more established in the market and easier to source. Innovation is the better choice for heavily shaded yards or high-traffic areas. For moderate shade and normal residential use, JaMur handles the job well at a proven price point.
